ROFECOXIB
VIOXX CLAIM SOLICITOR
The drug, also called rofecoxib, was a best selling Cox-2 anti-inflammatory and painkiller manufactured by Merck which was prescribed to over 400,000 Britons and was withdrawn in September after a study showed an increased risk of heart attack or stroke giving rise to hundreds of potential legal actions. A UK Vioxx claim solicitor will normally be able to give you an indication of you chances of success within a few weeks following review of your medical records. The European Medicines Agency released a statement in February 2005 advising that patients taking one of the most commonly prescribed classes of painkillers should stop their treatment immediately if they suffer from heart disease or stroke. Patients on Cox-2 inhibitors, anti-inflammatory drugs, which include Celebrex, Bextra and Arcoxia used by more than a million Britons, should observe urgent safety restrictions after a comprehensive review. Thousands of stroke and heart disease patients have been ordered to stop their medication and patients with high blood pressure have been advised to change from Arcoxia. Doctors must also exercise caution in prescribing to any patients who may be at an increased risk of heart disease including smokers, diabetics and sufferers of hypertension and high cholesterol. The Stroke Association said that the entire class of drugs should be withdrawn. "These drugs should not be prescribed unless or until their safety has been proven."
Doctors have been advised that if they do feel the need to prescribe a Cox-2 inhibitor it should be at the lowest effective dose for the shortest period appropriate to the condition and patients with osteoarthritis should be reviewed regularly. Alternative and apparently safer but less effective drugs for treating these problems include Arthrotec or Ponstan Forte. Given that there are alternative medications available a Vioxx claim solicitor will certainly be interested in any potential clients who have been advised to continue using Rofecoxib after the safety concerns were revealed and who subsequently suffered heart problems.
Cox-1 inhibitors which include Voltarol, Arthrotec and Naprosyn and Cox-2 inhibitors which includes Vioxx (rofecoxib), Celebrex, Crestor and Bextra have revolutionized treatment of inflammatory diseases, which includes all forms of arthritis however thousands of people die every year in the UK from their side-effects. Cox-2 inhibitors were thought to have advantages over Cox-1 inhibitors as there was not the same risk of death from gastrointestinal haemorrhage or perforation however it is now thought that Cox-2 inhibitors might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
