UK VIAGRA BLINDNESS
CLAIMS ADVICE SOLICITORS
British health officials from The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency have indicated that they had received reports of six suspected cases of alleged Viagra blindness in men aged over 50, caused when blood flow to the optic nerve is diminished which can lead to irreversible loss of vision.
US drugs regulators have announced that they are examining in excess of 50 cases in which users of the anti-impotence drug have suffered optic neuropathy otherwise known as a "stroke in the eye". A US Federal Drugs Administration spokesman has indicated that in some of the cases, users took Viagra before going to bed and woke up with little or no vision the next morning.
At this stage in the investigation there is no conclusive proof that the drug was to blame for loss of vision however the manufacturer Pfizer has indicated that it was aware of rare cases of blindness in users. Pfizer also advises that possible side effects of Viagra include "bluish or blurred vision, or being sensitive to light" which "may occur for a short time". There are also some concerns that there may also be risks involved in other members of this class of drugs including Cialis and Levitra.
In June 2002 the Australian Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee issued a report on the adverse effects of Viagra which included 65 cases concerning changes in vision most of which were transitory as a result of an increased blood supply to the retina however more important changes in vision have been noted including temporary loss of vision and permanent blindness. A University of Minnesota study in 2004 reported an interruption of the blood flow to the optic nerve in some men who took the drug causing a stroke in the optic nerve and subsequent impaired vision.
