UK ASTRAZENECA
CRESTOR ROSUVASTATIN

AstraZeneca Crestor Rosuvastatin is one of a group of chemicals called statins, which reduce the level of cholesterol in the body by inhibiting the body’s own cholesterol production mechanism. Statins taken at high levels are known to have attendant dangers and the highest 80-milligram dose was not approved by US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) because of serious side effects including muscle and kidney damage. There has been some concern that the drug may produce side effects even at lower doses necessitating close monitoring of patients. The dangers of the statin group of drugs include, but are not limited to liver damage, muscle aches, weakness, immune system suppression, an increase in cancer risk and a serious degenerative muscle tissue condition called rhabdomyolysis.

This drug was licensed for use in the UK in March 2003, but the UK Committee for the Safety of Medicines has stated that given the known risks they are continuing intensive surveillance of the product and Dr David Graham of the FDA has stated that there was an urgent need to investigate whether Crestor caused kidney failure and muscle damage.

There are real safety concerns about this drug particularly relating to whether the dosage at the start and the maintenance dosage are too high resulting in the risk of injury to the patient. Criticism has been raised in The Lancet relating to safety concerns and in particular allegations have been made that there has been inadequate assessment of this drug by the manufacturer who has revised the advice given to doctors following intervention by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and the Committee on the Safety of Medicines.

Alleged claims for injuries caused by this drug can be taken either on an individual basis or by the use of a procedural method known as a "multi party action" which allows a number of people with the same injury caused by the same product to sue as a group. Under the Consumer Protection Act 1987 it is no longer necessary to prove that the manufacturer of a product is at fault and damages must be paid for personal injury even when there is no evidence of negligence.
