Avandia and Actos are two pharmaceutical drugs manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline in the UK taken by millions of mostly overweight patients throughout the world who suffer from diabetes that have recently been the subject of two reports which indicate that Avandia and Actos side effects may be responsible for increased incidence of heart failure. The use of Avandia and Actos has doubled in the last three years due to increases in obesity which precipitates type II diabetes. The initial report was carried out by a US cardiologist which was followed up by a larger study from Wake Forest University. The second study involved over 26,000 patients and estimated that 1 in 50 of those who are prescribed Avandia or Actos for more than 26 months will suffer from heart failure whether or not they have suffered from heart problems in the past. Both the US Food and Drugs Administration and the European Medicines Agency are reviewing the matter and may in due course place restrictions on the sale of Avandia and Actos which could involve total withdrawal of the products.
