In an historic 1995 case a High Court Judge ruled that there was a direct causal link between environmental asbestos exposure and illness suffered by people who lived in the vicinity of a Leeds asbestos textile factory. The claimants in the case suffered from mesothelioma which was caused by exposure fifty years previously when, as children, they played within the vicinity of the factory. Evidence was heard that fibres were released into the atmosphere from ventilation fans, open windows and doors and that employees left the factory covered in dust thereby causing extensive contamination of the residential area around the factory. The Judge found that the Defendants owed the local residents a duty of care and that reasonably practicable steps were not taken to reduce emissions of dust which had been a recognised health hazard since 1933.

Exposure to these dangerous fibres is linked to a number of dangerous diseases including :

- Mesothelioma which is a cancer of the cells that make up the lining around the outside of the lungs or around the abdominal organs
